Our Honest Review: Listening to the Hyakunin Isshu through Kayano Ai’s voice.

Kayano Ai is best known to international audiences as Menma in Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Sylphiette in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, and Darkness in KonoSuba — roles that showcase her emotional range and distinctive presence. This work draws out something quite different. Dressed as a graceful senpai in a traditional hakama, she speaks in a soft, unhurried formal register, and from soft rustling “kosho-kosho~” whispers at the very start, it’s immediately clear this is its own thing.

The content is built around the Hyakunin Isshu — a classic collection of 100 Japanese waka poems — whispered at ear level while you rest on her lap or drift off beside her. The poems carry a natural rhythm and the beauty of classical Japanese language; knowing the meanings enriches the experience, but the sounds work on their own. The senpai-kouhai relationship, slightly formal and not quite close, finds a way to close that distance through love poetry, and the scriptwriting is precise about that tension.

Five tracks, 1 hour 14 minutes total, each running 12 to 24 minutes. The “Koihi Koite” track — “yearning and yearning” — pairs ear-blowing with lying beside you in a way that times perfectly with the drift toward sleep. The ear-blowing arriving just as you’re getting drowsy is clearly deliberate. This works well as a sleep-aid track; have a soft pillow and noise-cancelling headphones ready before you start.

Voice, script, and illustration all reach a high standard together. Ideal for Kayano Ai fans, and just as good an entry point for anyone looking for comfort or sleep ASMR.
